Geneva, Switzerland (4E) – The World Trade Organization (WTO) on Sunday announced Brazilian diplomat Roberto Azevedo as its sixth director general.
Azevedo will replace Frenchman Pascal Lamy, who ended his two four-year-long terms on August 31.
The General Council had appointed Azevedo on May 14 and would hold a special meeting next Monday to welcome him as the trade body’s new Director General.
In his welcome message, he said, “The choices that the WTO’s 159 members make in the coming months will determine the path we take as we set out together to strengthen and support the multilateral trading system.”
Before the welcome meeting at WTO, Azevedo is due to make his first international appearance at G-20 Leaders’ Summit in Saint Petersburg on September 5.
