San Francisco, CA, United States (4E) – The Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch is set to launch on September 4, but early images of the device are already circling the web. Venture Beat revealed images of a leaked prototype of Galaxy Gear. The photos reveal a device that resembles more closely a fitness tracker device than an actual watch. It’s estimated that the Galaxy Gear measures three-inches diagonally and comes with a four-megapixel camera.
It runs on Android and has Android apps pre-installed. The Galaxy Gear can connect to all Android devices via Bluetooth and can also connect to the web via Wi-Fi.
According to Venture Beat’s source, other Galaxy Gear features include: Samsung S Voice for voice commands; Integration with a companion Galaxy S phone or tablet; An easy-to-use swipe function to access apps; Call logs (A cool use-case: You can initiate a call from the watch to a Samsung smartphone device); Power button on the side; Social media integration — you can share to your Facebook or Twitter account from the watch; and 10+ hours battery life. The Galaxy Gear also has a version of Samsung’s health app S Health.
Apple and Sony are also expected to release smartwatch devices of its own. Google has also been a player in the wearable smart devices market with its Google Glass project.
