Johannesburg, South Africa (4E) – The hospital, treating 95-year-old anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela, since past three months for a respiratory illness, released him on Sunday, the South African government announced.
The government said that Mandela would continue to receive intensive care at his Johannesburg residence since he remained critically ill and “at times is unstable”.
The presidency added that the same team of doctors would look after him at his home. “If there are health conditions that warrant another admission to hospital in future, this will be done,” it stated.
Upon his return at his suburban home, north of Johannesburg shortly after 0900 GMT after spending 86 days in hospital, his family expressed joy with his grandson Mandla Mandela thanked people of his country as well as his grandfather’s supporters across the world for showing their love.
“It is a day of celebration for us that he is finally back home with us,” said grandson Mandla Mandela.
