Beijing, China (4E) – Yahoo China has been shut down after a failed run in the country. China tech company Alibaba Group operates and maintains the website. Currently, upon opening the Yahoo China homepage it redirects users to the public welfare website now.taobao.com, which is under Alibaba.
The shutdown of the homepage is what many expected after Yahoo China closed its e-mail service on August 19. Users were able to transfer their Yahoo mail accounts to Alibaba’s Alimail service.
Yahoo acquired a 40 percent stake in Alibaba eight years ago for a whopping $1 billion.
Yahoo isn’t the only American tech company that struggled with establishing a presence in China. Google, eBay and Amazon have also failed in gaining an audience. Factors like censorship and strong Chinese competition in from local Internet companies Baidu and Tencent are keeping American tech firms at bay.
“Tencent’s news and e-mail businesses grew quickly due to its big user base; Sohu and Sina also offer good online news,” Internet consultancy Analysys International analyst Wang Jun said, according to Global Times.
China e-Business Research Center analyst Feng Lin believes that Alibaba didn’t focus its efforts on developing Yahoo China instead choosing to work on its proprietary brands.
