Vancouver, BC, Canada (4E Sports) – Tom Heinemann buried a stoppage-time goal to help the Vancouver Whitecaps salvage a 2-2 draw with Chivas USA Sunday at BC Place.
Heinemann delivered the game-tying score three minutes into stoppage time, lashing home Erik Hurtado’s header past Dan Kennedy.
The deadlock gave the Whitecaps a crucial point to come within two markers of the Colorado Rapids and Portland Timbers for the fifth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
Erick Torres completed a first-half brace for Chivas USA, which remained dead-last in the West with 22 points, 17 points behind from the Rapids and Timbers.
Torres got things going for Chivas three minutes into the game when he scored on an incredible overhead kick from the edge of the area. The Mexican doubled Chivas’ lead in the 14th minute when he headed home a cross from Edgar Meja.
The Whitecaps went into the break two goals down despite holding the ball 55 percent of the time in the first half.
In the second half, the Whitecaps finally got on the board when Gershon Koffie caught Kennedy wandering in the 64th minute, firing home a right-footed effort from distance after the goalkeeper’s clearance went straight to him.
Chivas (5-14-7) returns to action Wednesday when it plays the Seattle Sounders at CenturyLink Field. The Whitecaps (10-9-7) will be on the road next Saturday as they face FC Dallas.
