Columbus, OH, United States (4E Sports) – The Seattle Sounders edged the Columbus Crew 1-0 at the Columbus Crew Stadium Saturday despite having to play more than 83 minutes of the game with 10 men.
That Crew got a man advantage for the remainder of the match after Sounders defender Leo Gonzalez was issued a red card in the 7th minute for yanking Crew forward Ryan Finley, who was breaking away toward the goal past halfway.
But the Sounders were able to score eight minutes later when Mauro Rosales’ free kick got to Eddie Johnson who headed for a goal.
A sliding block by Jhon Kennedy Hurtado prevented Jairo Arrieta from equalizing on a Dominic Oduro cross in the 33rd minute, and Crew goalkeeper Matt Lampson stopped a Lamar Neagle just before the half.
The Crew was still able to execute numerous crosses and passes into dangerous areas, they were notable to penetrate a tiring Sounders team that was clearly focused on defense.
In the 80th minute, Oduro faced a nearly open net after breaking through the Seattle defense, outrunning the last defender and cutting to his left past goalkeeper Michael Gspurning.
But Oduro’s shot was too close to Gspurning, who got a finger on the attempt and kept it out of the goal.
The win gave the Sounders 40 points on the season, good enough for third place in the Western Conference. Columbus stays in eighth place in the East with 29 points.
