Flushing Meadows, NY, United States (4E Sports) – World No. 2 and 2010 champion Rafael Nadal punched a ticket to the fourth round of the US Open after dismissing Ivan Dodig, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3, Saturday at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Nadal hit 37 winners and broke Dodig four times to claim victory in two hours and eight minutes and arrange a clash with Philipp Kohlschreiber, who ousted John Isner, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (5).
“I think I played a correct match today,” said Nadal. “To be able to win against him in straight sets is great news. I played better today than in the previous matches. Always a positive thing. Every win means a lot.”
Meanwhile, world No. 4 David Ferrer also advanced with a 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win over qualifier Mikhail Kukushkin. He will next face 18th seed Janko Tipsarevic, who defeated home hope Jack Sock, 3-6, 7-6(1), 6-1, 6-2 in two hours and 33 minutes.
Ferrer has a 4-1 record over Tipsarevic, including a five-set victory over the Serb in the US Open quarter-finals last year.
Milos Raonic reached the fourth round for the second year in a row after beating Feliciano Lopez, 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-3, 6-4, in two hours and 37 minutes.
The 22-year-old Raonic goes for his first Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance against eighth seed Richard Gasquet, who advanced after Dmitry Tursunov retired in the fourth set. Gasquet was leading, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, 4-2, when the Russian quit.
On the women’s side, wildcard Alison Riske defeated seventh seed Petra Kvitova, 6-3, 6-0, to book a spot in the fourth round.
Riske, ranked No. 81 in the world, landed 70 percent of her first serves and nailed 12 winners with just seven errors to claim the win and seal a clash with Daniela Hantuchova, who beat Julia Glushko, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (4).
Second seed Victoria Azarenka also advanced with a hard-fought 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-2 win over 26th seed Alize Cornet.
Azarenka, who needed almost three hours to beat Cornet, advanced against 13th seed Ana Ivanovic, who escaped with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 triumph over Christine McHale.
Simona Halep, seeded 21st in the event, also booked a spot in the next round against Flavia Pennetta after beating 14th seed Maria Kirilenko, 6-1, 6-0. Pennetta, for her part, beat 27th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova, 7-5, 6-1.
