Gainesville, FL, United States (4E Sports) – Loucheiz Purifoy has been suspended by the Florida Gators in Saturday’s season opener against Toledo due to unspecified violation of team rules.
He starts at cornerback but is also expected to see plays on offense and special teams.
The versatile Purifoy racked up 51 total tackles, deflected five passes and forced three fumbles for a defense that yielded just seven passing touchdowns all year.
Jaylen Watkins will start in Purifoy’s place.
According to the Palm Beach Post, Purifoy’s suspension, along with five others, were due to failed drug tests.
Among those suspended were defensive tackle Darious Cummings, wide receiver Latroy Pittman, and offensive lineman Quinteze Williams.
Starting linebacker Antonio Morrison was previously suspended following two arrests this summer, including one on June 16 for allegedly punching a bouncer.
But the university denied suspending Jay-nard Bostwick as earlier reported, and said that the defensive tackle is expected to play.
The Gators will also be without three other projected starters Saturday, namely: running back Matt Jones due to viral infection, offensive lineman Jon Halapio due to injury on the pectoral muscle and tackle Chaz Green due to shoulder injury.
All five suspended players including iAntonio Morrisoni are expected back for the road game against Miami next weekend.
