Memphis, TN, United States (4E Sports) – The Memphis Grizzlies waived Fab Melo Friday, two weeks after sending Donte Green to the Boston Celtics for the center.
The 7-foot, 255-pound Melo failed to convince the Grizzlies that he fits in its big men rotation of Marc Gasol, Zach Randolph, Kosta Koufus and Ed Davis.
He played in only six games for the Celtics, averaging 1.2 points and 6 minutes per game, before ending up with the Maine Red Claws in the NBA D-League where he played in 33 games.
Melo was the 22nd pick overall in 2012 after playing two seasons at Syracuse.
If the Brazilian is claimed off waivers, it spares the Grizzlies his $1.3 million this season.
The Grizzlies are currently below th NBA’s $71.7 million luxury tax line.
The Celtics cut their payroll from $72.5 million to $71.2 million after trading Melo and later releasing Green.
