Columbus, OH, United States (4E Sports) – Braxton Miller tossed for 178 yards and two touchdowns while Jordan Hall rushed for two scores as No. 2 Ohio State opened its season with a 40-20 victory over Buffalo Saturday at Ohio Stadium.
Miller completed 15 of 22 passes with an interception while backup play caller Kenny Guiton tossed his only pass for a 21-yard touchdown as the Buckeyes clinched their 13th straight win after going 12-0 last season.
Hall recorded 159 yards on 21 carries in just his seventh start in five years, Chris Fields caught three passes for 53 yards and Devin Smith had three catches for 61 yards and a score for the Buckeyes.
For Buffalo, Joe Licata went 19-32 for 187 yards, two touchdowns and an interception while Alex Neutz caught nine passes for 98 yards and a score. Branden Oliver led the team on the ground with 73 yards on 26 carries.
Ohio State went up 16-0 early on two touchdown passes from Miller to Devin Smith and Chris Fields, with Guiton converting two-point opportunities on each of the scoring plays. A touchdown rush by Hall made it 23-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Buffalo, however, made it interesting in the second quarter when Licata hit tight end Mason Schreck for a touchdown to get the Bulls on the board.
Two minutes later, star defensive end Khalil Mack picked off Miller and ran it back 47 yards for a touchdown. However, the Bulls missed a two-point conversion play.
However, Hall took over, scoring on a 37-yard touchdown run with less than a minute in the second period to make it a 30-13 game at the break.
In the third, Buffalo pulled within 10 points on a Licata’s 10-yard scoring heave to Neutz but Guiton, who entered the game when Miller suffered leg cramps, tossed a 21-yard touchdown pass to Fields to give the Buckeyes a 37-20 cushion.
