Atlanta, GA, United States (4E Sports) – Versatile wide receiver Christion Jones scored three touchdowns as top-ranked Alabama opened its drive for a third straight national crown with a 35-10 triumph over Virginia Tech Saturday before a sellout crowd of 73,114 at Georgia Dome.
Jones accounted for 256 all-purpose yards — 100 via punt returns, 109 via kickoff returns and 47 receiving – on seven touches as the Crimson Tide scored three non-offensive touchdowns in a game for the first time since September 30, 1995.
Jones scored on a 72-yard punt return in the first quarter and went 94 yards on a kickoff return in the second quarter to become the first player to score two touchdowns via returns in one game since1944.
Safety Vinnie Sunseri scored on a 38-yard interception return in the second period while Jones added a 38-yard scoring reception from quarterback AJ McCarron in the third quarter to wrap up the win.
McCarron hit 10 of 24 passes for 110 yards and a score with one interception while wide receiver Amari Cooper led the Crimson Tide with 38 yards on four catches. T.J. Yeldon led Alabama with 75 rushing yards on 17 carries with a touchdown.
Defensive end Ed Stinson was the leading tackler for Alabama with eight tackles and shared a quarterback sack. Linebacker C.J. Mosley had seven tackles for Alabama while free safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix made six stops.
Logan Thomas completed just five of 26 passes for 59 yards while Trey Edmunds rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries for the Hokies.
The Crimson Tide raced to a 28-10 halftime lead, thanks to Jones’ two touchdown returns, an interception return by Sunseri and a scoring rush by Yeldon. In the third, Jones recorded his third touchdown after a 38-yard reception from McCarron.
With the win, Alabama is now 12-1 against Virginia Tech.
