Flushing Meadows, NY, United States (4E Sports) – Flavia Pennetta of Italy booked a spot in the third round of the US Open with a 6-3, 6-1 upset over compatriot and fourth seed Sara Errani Wednesday at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Pennetta hit 33 winners compared to Errani’s 12 to finish the match in one hour and 11 minutes and seal a third-round clash with 27th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova, who won a two-hour, 48-minute marathon against Peng Shuai, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
Pennetta’s win over the Errani was her 10th career win over a Top 5 player. Her first nine came against Justine Henin, Jelena Jankovic (twice), Venus Williams, Samantha Stosur (twice), Vera Zvonareva, Maria Sharapova and Caroline Wozniacki.
“It’s not easy to play one of your friends, but tennis is like this,” Pennetta said. “You just have to go on the court leave it all out there – you have to play your game and not think about who you’re playing.”
Meanwhile, top seed Serena Williams took one step closer to a fifth US Open title with a dominating 6-3, 6-0 victory over unseeded Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan.
In the third round, Williams, a 16-time Slam singles titlist, will next face Yaroslava Shvedova, who beat P.Mayr-Achleitner, 6-2, 6-3.
Second seed Victoria Azarenka also advanced with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Aleksandra Wozniak. She will take on Alize Cornet, who ousted Ajla Tomljanovic, 6-2, 6-2.
Other winners were Caroline Wozniacki, Alison Riske, Jelena Jankovic, Simona Halep, Christina McHale, Karin Knapp, Ekaterina Makarova, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Petra Kvitova, Angelique Kerber, Kurumi Nara, Sabine Lisicki, Ana Ivanovic, Roberta Vinci, Yaroslava Shvedova, Kaia Kanepi and Maria Kirilenko.
On the men’s side, seventh seed Roger Federer reached the third round with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 win over Carlos Berlocq.
Federer hit 37 winners and converted seven of his 13 break points opportunities for victory in one hour and 35 minutes. He will next play Adrian Mannarino, who prevailed over 26th seed Sam Querrey, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5), 6-7, 6-4.
Fourth seed David Ferrer recorded his 25th match win at Flushing Meadows when he defeated fellow Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-2 for a place in the third round.
Ferrer goes on to challenge qualifier Mikhail Kukushkin, who advanced with a 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 win over Andreas Haider-Maurer.
Eighth seed Richard Gasquet recovered from a slow start to beat fellow Frenchman Stephane Robert, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5. He will play 32nd seed Dmitry Tursunov, who was leading Guillaume Rufin 7-6(4), 1-1 when his opponent retired due to a right groin strain.
Janko Tipsarevic, who has reached the quarter-finals for the past two years, overcame Dudi Sela 6-4, 6-4, 6-1. The No. 18 seed will next face qualifier Jack Sock, who ousted qualifier Maximo Gonzalez, 7-6(3), 1-6, 7-5, 6-2.
