Minneapolis, MN, United States (4E Sports) – Erstwhile Washington Wizards’ vice president of player personnel for the past 10 seasons Milt Newton is the new Minnesota Timberwolves general manager.
Newton interviewed with Timberwolves’ president of basketball operations Flip Sanders last week in and was in Minneapolis Tuesday to reach an agreement.
Saunders worked with Newton during his 2½-year stint as head coach of the Wizards, where the latter directed the scouting department and created the team’s comprehensive scouting database, as well as led pre-draft efforts and conducted workouts for prospects.
With the Timberwolves, he would fill the role of an experienced executive to deal with scouting and other aspects of running the team.
Newton played professionally in the Continental Basketball Association and has previously worked as a scout with the Philadelphia 76ers, assistant director of USA Men’s Basketball and served as the director of player personnel for the NBA Development League before joining the Wizards.
The Wolves also plan on elevating Rob Babcock to a vice president of personnel position.
Saunders still will have final say in all personnel decisions, but will be leaning heavily on Newton and Babcock on all moves.
