Vancouver, BC, Canada (4E Sports) – LA Galaxy used Landon Donovan’s third minute goal to frustrate the Vancouver Whitecaps at BC Place Stadium Saturday night.
Donovan scored with a left-footed shot from outside the box to the top left corner.
The Whitecaps came close to tying the game several times but failed.
In the 10th minute, Gershon Koffie left footed shot from outside the box missed to the right.
The Whitecaps’ best chance came just before half-time as L.A. goalkeeper Jaime Penedo made a diving save in the bottom left corner on Nigel Reo-Coker’s right footed shot from outside the box.
Then Kenny Miller missed left footed shot from the centre of the box in the 53rd minute.
Jordan Harvey broke through clean on goal in the 66th minute, but attempted to pass it to Darren Mattocks rather than shoot. The Galaxy reacted well and broke up the pass before the play came together.
A diving save by Jaime Penedo in the 82nd minute against a Kekuta Manneh shot went on to hit the post, while Jordan Harvey’s left footed shot from the centre of the box is saved in the centre of the goal.
Moments later, Keane had the chance at close range to pad Galaxy’s lead but misfired the into the side netting.
Donovan needs four more goals to become the all-time leading scorer in MLS history. L.A. goalkeeper Jaime Penedo recorded his first MLS shutout in only his second career league appearance and third overall with the Galaxy.
The win pushed the Galaxy to second place with 12-9-4 and 40 points in the tight Western Conference while dropping the Whitecaps to 10-9-6 and 36 points,to sixth.
