Florham Park, NJ, United States (4E Sports) – New York Jets coach Rex Ryan has announced that rookie quarterback Geno Smith will start against the New York Giants Saturday.
“I think (Smith’s) looked good,” Ryan told the New York Daily News. “I’m excited to see him play.”
Ryan also said that Mark Sanchez will also see action against the Giants. “We did say all along it was going to be an equal competition,” he said.
While they are familiar with Sanchez’s ability, offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said the Jets need more time to judge Smith.
“There’s no question that I think we can do some very good things with Mark,” Mornhinweg said. “Don’t quite know where Geno’s at yet, even though we might think we know, but those preseason games are such a good evaluation period for a young man.”
Smith has been hampered by an ankle injury that he sustained in his preseason debut.
However, after taking the majority of the repetitions with the first-team offense this week in practice, Smith was officially dubbed as the starter for Saturday’s contest, the Jets’ third preseason game.
Sanchez has started each of the first two preseason games, completing 63.9 percent of his passes while throwing two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. Smith went 6-for-7 for 47 yards in the preseason opener.
