San Diego, CA, United States (4E) – Supporters of San Diego Mayor Bob Filner rallied outside city hall on Monday noon to counter a recall effort against him stemming from sexual harassment allegations by some women.
The rally was organized by activist Enrique Morones and joined by the mayor’s campaign volunteers, former city officials and other activists. The demonstrators calling themselves “San Diegans for Mayor Bob Filner” carried placards that read, “Due process for Mayor Filner” and “Vets for Bob.”
ilner did not appear in the rally, which was to welcome his return from a behavior therapy. But he was seen in another building a couple of blocks away in what could be a mediation meeting with one of his sexual harassment accusers.
The meeting reportedly held at the 15th floor of 101 West Broadway involved City Attorney Jan Goldsmith, Attorney Gloria Allred, City Councilman Kevin Faulconer, City Council President Todd Gloria and Filner’s lawyers, sources told U-T San Diego and 10news.
Allred represents Irene McCormack Jackson, the mayor’s former communications director who sued Filner and the city for sexual harassment. In an email to reporters, she refused to comment about the meeting.
Former federal judge J. Lawrence Irving, who has an office in the said building, was also reported to be part of the mediation that is reportedly exploring the possibility of the mayor resigning.
Filner had denied the sexual harassment charges and refused to resign amid a recall petition launched Sunday. The recall petitioners have until Sept. 26 to gather 101,000 signatures to put the petition in the November ballot.
Filner is also the subject of a separate complaint by Goldsmith related to allegations that he put on hold two housing developments until contractors pay a six-figure amount to the city. The case is under investigation by the FBI, Sheriff’s Department, the city and state attorney’s offices and the U.S. Attorney.
