Boston, MA, United States (4E Sports) – Chael Sonnen snapped a two-fight losing streak by submitting former UFC light-heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in the first round of their main event bout at UFC Fight Night Saturday at TD Garden .
Sonnen, who has lost to Anderson Silva and Jon Jones in back-to-back title fights, took Rua down seconds into the fight and kept up the pressure even as “Shogun” got back up to his feet quickly.
Sonnen missed a couple of huge shots late into the fight but was able to trap Rua in a guillotine choke in the last 30 seconds of the fight. The former champion tapped at the 4:47 mark of the first round.
“I’m the man of the hour too sweet to be sour,” Sonnen said after improving to 29-13-1. “Wanderlei Silva, in three months, [it's] you and the bad guy.”
Rua (21-8) has struggled to find consistency inside the Octagon. He has lost two fights in a row and is only 2-5 since losing his title to Jones in March 2011.
In other matches, Travis Browne put himself in the heavyweight title picture with a first-round knockout of former Strikeforce champion Alistair Overeem.
Overeem came out aggressively, landing hard punches and kicks that had Browne wobbly.
However, Browne (15-1-1) went on an attack of his own, catching Overeem (36-13) with kicks to the body. Then, Browne threw a left kick that hit Overeem’s jaw and sent him to the canvas.
Overeem would not get a chance to recover as Browne delivered several right hammer fists, which forced referee Mario Yamasaki to jump in at the 4:08 mark.
In other matches, Urijah Faber beat Yuri Alcantara via unanimous decision, Matt Brown scored a first-round knockout of former WEC titleholder Mike Pyle and John Howard edged Uriah Hall via split decision.
Lightweight Michael Johnson scored an easy unanimous win over Joe Lauzon,
bantamweight Michael McDonald beat Brad Pickett via second-round submission and Conor McGregor defeated Max Holloway by unanimous decision.
