London, England, United Kingdom (4E Sports) – Robin van Persie and Danny Welbeck scored two goals apiece as Manchester United opened its Premier League title defense and a new era under new manager David Moyes with a 4-1 win over Swansea City.
United took control of the match with first-half goals from van Persie and Welbeck. The duo added a goal apiece in the second half to give Moyes his first Premier League win with United since taking over Sir Alex Ferguson.
“It was another day at the office and I just had to get on and do the job and try to make sure we got a result. It’s one game gone. If we had lost today there might have been people talking,” Moyes said.
Ivorian striker Wilfried Bony scored a late goal in his Premier League debut for Swansea City.
Van Persie opened scoring with a sweetly struck volley in the 34th minute while Welbeck added another score two minutes later to give Manchester United a 2-0 lead at the break.
Van Persie then completed his brace with a solo effort in the 72nd minute before Bony put the host on the board with a strike from the penalty area for a 3-1 game. Then, Welbeck’s perfectly executed chip over Michel Vorm sealed the win for Manchester City.
Before the game, Moyes relegated striker Wayne Rooney to the bench as he preferred to use Van Persie as a lone striker, with Ryan Giggs and Welbeck providing support.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa dealt Arsenal its first opening-day defeat at home in 20 years with a 3-1 victory at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal took the lead through Olivier Giroud’s neat flick six minutes into the game but Christian Benteke tied the game in the 22nd minute.
Benteke then added a penalty goal in the 61st minute while Antonio Luna added an insurance score in the 85th minute to seal the win.
