Chicago, IL, United States (4E Sports) – Allen Craig drove in the go-ahead run while Yadier Molina added a three-run homer in the ninth to carry the St. Louis Cardinals to a 10-6 win over the Chicago Cubs, salvaging a four-game split Sunday at Wrigley Field.
Craig went 4-for-5 and recorded an RBI while Molina broke a 0-for-17 slump by driving in four runs as the Cardinals pounded a season-high 21 hits to improve their National League Central-best record to 57-36 before the All-Star break.
Pete Kozma ended a 0-for-28 skid by going 3-for-6 and driving in a pair of runs while Matt Carpenter, David Freese, Matt Adams added an RBI apiece for the Cardinals.
Adam Wainwright failed in his bid for a 13th victory when he earned a no-decision for allowing four runs on eight hits with a walk and four strikeouts over six innings. Edward Mujica (2-1) got the win after holding the Cubs scoreless in the last 1 1/3 innings.
Travis Wood held the Cardinals to three runs on 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings, and falling one out shy of becoming the first Cubs pitcher ever to record 18 quality starts before the All-Star break.
Wood’s 17 quality starts lead the Majors, and he’s the fourth Cubs pitcher in franchise history to have that many at the break, joining Bill Hands (1969), Fergie Jenkins (1969) and Greg Maddux (1988).
“When a guy has done what Travis has done, that’s our horse, and that’s our most consistent guy,” Cubs manager Dale Sveum said after the game.
Darwin Barney went 3-for-4 with his sixth home run and four RBIs while Kevin Gregg (2-2) absorbed the loss after allowing four runs in the ninth.
Chicago was trailing, 3-1, in the sixth when Dioner Navarro and Brian Bogusevic hit back-to-back singles. One out later, Barney launched the first pitch into the basket rimming the left-field bleachers for his sixth home run and a 4-3 Cubs lead.
The Cardinals bounced back in the seventh when Molina doubled and scored one out later on Kozma’s single that dropped over shortstop Starlin Castro.
One out later, pinch-hitter Daniel Descalso singled to chase Matt Guerrier, and Carpenter greeted James Russell with a go-ahead RBI single for a 5-4 lead Matt Adams added an RBI double in the eighth, driving in Freese from second for a two-run edge.
However, Cody Ransom tied the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the eighth with a pinch-hit two-run double off Mujica.
