Kansas City, MO, United States (4E Sports) – Mike Aviles drove in a career-high five runs as the Cleveland Indians bounced back from a 9-0 defeat in the first game of a doubleheader with a 10-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals in the nightcap Sunday at Kauffman Stadium.
Aviles hit a three-run shot in the third while Asdrubal Cabrera, Nick Swisher, Carlos Santana and Drew Stubbs contributed an RBI each as the Indians snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 9-13.
Starter Corey Kluber (2-0) pitched seven strong innings, limiting the Royals to two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts for his second win while batterymate Yan Gomes added a run and a triple for the Indians.
Will Smith, in his first start of the season for Kansas City, took the loss after giving up six runs — four earned — on seven hits in four-plus innings while Chris Getz had two RBIs for the Royals (13-9).
In the first inning, Santana put the Indians on the board with an RBI single before Aviles hit a run-scoring grounder for a 2-0 lead.
Starting at second base in place of Jason Kipnis, Aviles smacked a three-run shot in the third while Stubbs added an RBI sacrifice fly to center to put the Indians ahead by 6-0.
Getz cut the deficit with a two-run single in the bottom part of the fourth but the Indians countered with four runs in the seventh and eighth frames for a 10-2 lead. Lorenzo Cain hit an RBI sacrifice in the eighth for the final score.
In the first game of the twinbill, the Royals tagged Indians starter Justin Masterson for seven runs on nine hits in 6 1/3 frames en route to a 9-0 victory.
Alcides Escobar and Alex Gordon homered while Jeremy Guthrie (3-0) gave up six hits with three walks and five strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings for his third win.
