Illinois town home shooting kills 5, gunman slain

Chicago, IL, United States (4E) – A man barged into a Manchester, Illinois home Wednesday and shot dead five members of a family, including two children. Police later shot dead the gunman.

Scott County police identified the dead victims as Joanne Sinclair, 65, her granddaughter Brittany Luark, 22, her boyfriend Roy Ralston, Nolan Ralston, 5, and Bradley Ralston, 1. Another family member, Cassidy Ralston, 6, was seriously wounded in the shooting.

Police later spotted the shooting suspect, Rick Smith, 43, driving a white Chevy Lumina and gave chase. When Smith pulled over, a gunfight ensued and he was shot. He was arrested and taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police are investigating the motive for the shooting. A neighbor claimed the gunman had a dispute with Sinclair’s daughter over the custody of their 4-year-old daughter.

Smith is the nephew of Manchester Mayor Ron Drake, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
