Bison Make Bearcats Pay for Errors, Walks in 18-7 Opener

HUNTINGDON — The Clearfield Area High School baseball team took advantage of Huntingdon’s generosity to open the season with an 18-7 victory in a Mountain League make-up on Juniata College’s Landon-Goodale Field Saturday afternoon.

Only six of the Bison runs were earned, as six of the eight Bearcat errors factored into the scoring.

In addition, the Bison received a dozen walks and had one hit batsman.

Eight of those runners crossed home plate.

Clearfield put its 11 hits to good use, with all but one recorded in the four innings the Bison scored.

Cole Kephart, Curtis Collins and Josh Kennedy had two hits apiece.

After Huntingdon put up a four-spot in the second inning, Clearfield came right back to tie it up against sophomore Hunter Price, who had no-hit the Bison through six innings in a 6-4 win in the latter part of the 2012 season.

“He’s a good pitcher, and he definitely handled us last year,” Bison coach Sid Lansberry said. “He just had a little trouble with control, and we waited him out. He had a lot of 3-2 counts. He walked six, but we had only two hits off him.”

One was a two-out, two-run single by Kennedy after Thomas Summers had knocked in the first run with a sacrifice fly.

“That was a big hit there,” Lansberry said. “What I liked was we got down 4-0 when we made a couple mental mistakes and had an error, but nobody panicked. They didn’t fall apart. We came right back in the third and then had a big inning.

“That might be a good sign.”

Two Bearcat miscues, coupled with four walks, opened the gates to a nine-run stampede by the Bison in the fourth frame, with all of the runs unearned. Spencer Herrington and pinch-hitter Erik Sellers singled for ribbies before Jonas Kochan socked a two-run single. The final two tallies were the result of wild pitches.

Kephart tripled and Collins singled for a run in the sixth, and Sawyer Rowles doubled for an RBI in the seventh when three errors and a hit batsman helped the Bison tack on four runs.

Summers picked up the win with a four-inning stint in relief of Janocko, who pitched three innings and gave up five hits and five runs, four earned.

Summers allowed three hits and two runs, one earned, while striking out six and walking two.

“I’m glad it worked out to get a game in, especially on a decent day,” said Lansberry, whose team has yet to practice on its home diamond and had two games postponed last week because of the inclement weather. “All 17 kids got into the game. It’s a good start.”

The Bison are scheduled for another ML make-up Monday against Central at Martinsburg and then home games Bald Eagle Area Wednesday and Bellefonte Friday.
