Russellville, AR, United States (4E) – An accident at Arkansas’ only nuclear power plant killed one worker and injured three others Sunday. The plants’ two reactors were not affected and the public was not in danger, though operator Entergy shut them down as a precaution.

Pope County Coroner Leonard Krout identified the worker killed at Arkansas Nuclear One on Lake Dardanelle in Russellville as Wade Walters, 24.

Entergy released a statement expressing sympathy to the family of the victim and those who were injured. The injured were taken to a local hospital and there are no information about their condition and injury.

The company’s statement only said that a generator stator fell while being moved from a turbine building separate from the reactors. Witnesses said they heard a loud noise coming from the accident site around 7:45 a.m.

Arkansas Nuclear One has two reactors that started operation in the 70s and produce a combined 1,775 megawatt of electricity. It supplies 30 percent of the state’s power needs.
