Washington, United States (4E) – In a move sure to create waves in Congress, Senate majority leader Harry Reid on Tuesday refused to include Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein-sponsored proposal of renewing the assault weapons ban in a broader gun package.
Talking to reporters, he said that the proposal to impose ban on high-capacity magazines and other assault weapons could not even win 40 votes in the Democrats-controlled 100-member Senate.
Democrats hold 55 seats in the Senate.
“Right now her amendment, using the most optimistic numbers, has less than 40 votes,” Reid said and added, “I have to get something on the floor so we can have votes on that issue.”
The ban was called in the wake of last December’s Connecticut school-massacre in which 20 children and six adults have been killed.
