Police Warn Residents of Telephone Scam

SANDY TOWNSHIP – The Sandy Township police would like to advise residents of a telephone scam.

On Wednesday, a 91-year-old DuBois woman received a telephone call from someone who claimed to be her grandson. She was told he’d been injured and needed $2,000 to be released from the hospital. After saying she didn’t have any transportation to the bank, the caller told her they had a friend nearby who could take her.

After the telephone call, the woman contacted police, because she was concerned about a stranger arriving at her residence. Police assured her the telephone call was a scam and to contact them immediately if a stranger came to her residence.

Police have advised residents that if they receive a telephone call with either area code 787 or 939 and they do not know anyone in Puerto Rico, the call is likely a telephone scam.  Police have also advised residents not to give any personal information or to send any money to anyone making such calls.
