Phoenix, AZ, United States (4E Sports) – Adam Jones ripped a two-run double in the eighth inning to help the United States advance to the next round of the World Baseball Classic with a 9-4 win over Canada Sunday at Chase Field.
The Americans secured their place in the second round of the WBC behind a clutch hit by the Baltimore Orioles slugger.
With the United States trailing 3-2 in the 8th inning, Jones came through with a two-run double to give his team their first taste of the lead at 4-2.
Outfielder Shane Victorino followed it up with an RBI single to double the Americans’ lead. Adam Loewen made things interesting for the Canadians after driving Joey Votto home with a grounder in the bottom of the 8th.
However, the Americans were too much for Canada as Jonathan Lucroy scored an RBI single and Eric Hosmer added a two-run double to put the icing on the cake.
With the victory, the Americans finished the first round with a 2-1 record and took the top spot in Pool D after topping Italy earlier in the tourney.
Canada was eliminated in this year’s WBC but managed to qualify in the next edition of the baseball spectacle with a third-place finish at 1-2.
