London, England, United Kingdom (4E Sports) – Steven Gerrard buried the go-ahead penalty kick in the 82nd minute as Liverpool kept its hopes of cracking the top four alive in the Premier League with a 3-2 victory over Tottenham Saturday at Anfield.
Luis Suarez also scored his league-leading 29th goal of the season to help Liverpool advance to a sixth-place tie with Everton with 45 points apiece, seven points behind fourth place Chelsea.
Despite the loss, Tottenham remained third but failed to gain any ground on Chelsea, which is just two points behind.
Suarez drew first blood with a goal in the 21st minute but center-back Jan Vertonghen had scored twice in the 45th and 53rd minute to put Tottenham ahead, 2-1.
Miscalculations by both Kyle Walker and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris allowed Stewart Downing to hit the equalizer in the 66th minute.
Later, Benoit Assou-Ekotto barged into Suarez, resulting in a penalty kick for Gerrard which he buried calmly for his ninth goal.
Meanwhile, Senegal forward Papiss Cisse delivered a goal two minutes into stoppage time to carry Newcastle United to a 2-1 win over Stoke City at St. James Park.
The win put Newcastle United nine points clear of the Premier League relegation zone. Newcastle and Stoke City are tied for ninth place with Fulham, West Ham and Norwich with 33 points apiece.
“It was a very important win, because it jumps us right up the Premier League and gives us a chance to attack the top ten. But we were fortunate in some ways, Stoke came here and were excellent today and that was as good a defensive display as you will see,” Newcastle manager Alan Pardew said.
Jonathan Walters gave Stoke City the lead with a penalty kick in the 67th minute but Yohan Cabaye’s free-kick six minutes later tied the game.
