Waymart, PA, United States (4E) – An inmate at a high-security jail in Waymart, Pennsylvania has killed a 34-year-old guard Monday night, the first time a prison officer has died at work in almost five years.
According to reports, the unidentified inmate used a homemade weapon to attack Eric Williams.
Canaan Penitentiary Warden officials have not revealed the cause of death Williams’ but his sister said a coroner told her he was stabbed multiple times.
The BBC revealed that the Bureau of Prisons claimed the last time a federal officer died on the job was in June 2008 in California.
It was reported that at least three inmates have been killed at the jail, which opened in 2005.
Williams, who has been working as a prison guard since September 2011, was working in a housing unit when the assault occurred, and other prison workers managed to restrain the attacker.
The victim was rushed to the hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Officials said the Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking into the case.
