Pretoria, South Africa (4E) – South African Olympic hero Oscar Pistorius on Tuesday told the court that he ‘mistakenly’ killed his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
Denying the charges of premeditated murder, Pistorius said he had no intention of killing Reeva, adding that he killed her when she was in the bathroom, mistakenly believing her as an intruder into his house.
“I am absolutely mortified by the events and the devastating loss of my beloved Reeva,” Pistorius said in an affidavit in Pretoria. In a statement read out by his lawyer, he said, “I had no intention to kill my girlfriend. We were deeply in love and couldn’t be more happy.”
“He’s definitely been broken,” his public relations manager Stuart Higgins said. If convicted, the “Blade Runner”, the first double amputee who competed against able-bodied athletes in the Olympics and inspired millions of people across the world, would have to face life imprisonment.
Recalling the Valentine’s Day incident, Pistorius said that he heard a noise from the bathroom when he awoke late that night to bring a fan from balcony.
He said that he got filled with horror amid fears that someone intruded into his house possibly with burglary motive, adding that he had been a victim of violence and burglaries before.
He added that he fired shots at the toilet door from his 9 mm Parabellum and called Reeva to call the police. When his girlfriend did not respond, he went to his bed only to find Reeva not in it that sparked a sense of fear in him that Reeva could be in toilet.
He told court that he smashed the door with a cricket bat and Reeva struggling for her life. As Pistorius recalled his beloved Reeva’s death in his arms, he broke into tears again. However, prosecutors alleged that Pistorius’ story was fake, and charged him with premeditated act of murder, adding that they are trying to find the motive of the murder.
