Library Announces “Books-Sandwiched-In” Series
CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield Branch of AAUW will hold its annual Books-Sandwiched-In series at the Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library on Wednesdays throughout March. Each year the AAUW organizes several book reviews presented by local book lovers and authors. Speakers share information about a selected book while the audience enjoys a delicious meal prepared by the event organizers.
“AAUW: Books-Sandwiched-In 2013” will begin at 12 p.m. March 6. Sharon Gregory will present Paula McLain’s novel The Paris Wife, the story of author Ernest Hemingway and his love affair with his first wife, Hadley. According to the description of the book, Ernest, surrounded by women and other authors, struggles to find the voice that will earn him a place in history, while Hadley strives to hold on to her sense of self as the demands of life with Ernest grow costly and her role becomes more challenging. Despite their bond, they eventually find themselves facing the ultimate crisis of their marriage, a deception that will lead to the unraveling of everything they’ve fought so hard for.
At 12 p.m. March 13, Prague Winter: a Personal Story of Remembrance and War, 1937-1948 by Madeline Albright will be reviewed by Edie Shrot. Prior to author Albright turning 12 years old, she experienced a Nazi invasion of her home country, the Battle of Britain, the near total destruction of European Jewry, an Allied victory of World War II, the communist rise to power, and the beginning of the Cold War. Based on Albright’s memories, written testimonies from family members, and interviews with contemporaries and other documents, the author recounts a traumatic and inspirational story.
David Wulderk will present a three-volume group of books about Theodore Roosevelt by Edmund Morris at 7 p.m. March 20. The titles of the books are The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt, Theodore Rex, and Colonel Roosevelt. The review will discuss the life of Roosevelt and feature his connection to the Clearfield area.
The series will conclude at 12 p.m. March 27 with a review by author Thom Thomas on his books …give or take a pebble and …give or take a shilling. The presentation will feature two parts of a four-part series. The books take several of the famous characters from Charles Dickens’ classic novel A Christmas Carol, including Ebenezer Scrooge, on a year-long journey and examine how their lives have changed. The stories include backstories, new characters, hidden secrets, acts of revenge, and many more twists and turns.
The cost for the lunch provided during the presentations by Sharon Gregory, Edie Schrot, and Thom Thomas is $4. The evening presentation by David Wulderk features desserts and will cost $3. The proceeds from all three programs fund projects sponsored by AAUW.
