Piscataway, NJ, United States (4E Sports) – Vivian Stringer’s quest to join the 900-win club will have to wait another day as No. 3 Connecticut defeated Rutgers, 65-45, Saturday at Louis Brown Athletic Center.
Morgan Tuck tallied 15 markers while Stefanie Dolson had 14 to carry the Huskies to their 12th straight win after tasting their only defeat at the hands of No. 5 Notre Dame last month.
Huskies leading scorer Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis was limited to just 12 points on 3-for-7 shooting while Moriah Jefferson added 10 off the bench for Connecticut, which won its last 10 meetings with Rutgers.
The win improved the Huskies to 24-1 and 11-1 in the Big East Conference, good for second behind the perfect 11-0 record of the Fighting Irish.
Stringer was eyeing to clinch her 900th win and join Pat Summitt, Jody Conradt and Sylvia Hatchell as the only women’s basketball coaches to reach that milestone.
She will have another shot at the record when the Scarlet Knights take on No. 23 Syracuse Tuesday.
Shakena Richardson was the only player in double digit with 10 markers for the Scarlet Knights, who dropped to 14-10 (5-6 Big East) following their second straight defeat.
Syessence Davis added eight and Monique Oliver had seven for Rutgers, which shot 17-for-48 from the field for a 35.4 percent clip.
Oliver scored four straight points to give Rutgers a 14-4 lead early in the first half but Connecticut outscored the Scarlet Knights, 18-4, in the next eight minutes to take a 22-18 lead.
Mosqueda-Lewis then buried a three-pointer with eight seconds remaining to put the Huskies ahead by 33-27 at the break.
In the second period, Dolson and Mosqueda-Lewis sparked a short 7-0 burst to give the Huskies a 38-27 lead.
