Chiney Ogwumike shines as No. 4 Stanford downs USC

Los Angeles, CA, United States (4E Sports) – Chiney Ogwumike recorded her 20th double-double of the season with 26 points and 15 caroms as No. 4 Stanford downed USC, 79-55, Friday at Galen Center.

Ogwumike shot 9-for-15 from the field while Joslyn Tinkle contributed 17 points and 11 boards as the Cardinal (23-2) stormed to their ninth straight victory and 12th win in 13 Pac-12 games, joining No. 6 California atop the leaderboard.

Ogwumike now has 50 double-doubles in her three-year career with Stanford, one short of older sister Nneka’s record she compiled from 2008-12. Nneka now plays for the Los Angeles Sparks in the NBA.

Mikaela Ruef scored a career-high 12 points and eight rebounds while Amber Orrange had 10 points for the Cardinal, who beat the Trojans for the 12th consecutive time.

Alexyz Vaioletama fired 14 points while Cassie Harberts chipped in 13 but their efforts weren’t enough to prevent the Trojans (8-16, 5-8) from tasting their fifth straight defeat.

With their eighth loss in nine games, the Trojans slipped to 8-16 (5-8 Pac-12).

The game was close in the first nine minutes of the first half, with the Cardinal leading by just 14-12.

The Cardinal then scored five unanswered points, sparked by Ogwumike’s layup, to extend their lead to 19-12

The Trojans retaliated with five straight points to cut the deficit to two before Orrange scored seven points in an 11-2 blast to give the Cardinal a 31-19 cushion at the break.

Overall, the Cardinal shot 27-for-62 from the field for 43.5 percent while the Trojans made just 19 of 57 attempts for 33.3 percent.

Stanford dominated the boards, 43-27, and had more assists, 16-12.
