TYRONE – Vanessa Fazio, Ph.D. and her associate, Christina Beccue Kunec, PsyD, members of a team of internationally-known concussion experts from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Sports Medicine Concussion Program provided the latest information on concussion at symposiums held Wednesday in Tyrone.
More than 200 healthcare and athletic professionals as well as students and community members from around the area attended the symposium. The symposium was provided free of charge and co-sponsored by Tyrone Hospital and the Tyrone Area School District with support from University Orthopedics Center and Blair Orthopedics. The symposium was offered as part of Tyrone Hospital’s new health and wellness initiative
Symposium attendees received the latest information on concussion management, outcomes and risk factors associated with sports concussion, treatment/rehabilitation protocols and the use of ImPACT as a tool for effective concussion management.
According to information from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, research shows that one in 10 high school athletes who play contact sports will suffer a concussion this year.
