Texas manhunt continues for violent sex offender
Dallas, TX, United States (4E) – Authorities are still looking for the 42-year-old convicted sex offender who stabbed one of his two Miami-Dade police escorts Monday before he escaped in Grapevine, Texas.
Police said Alberto Morales, who reportedly used his eyeglasses to hurt Miami-Dade Police Detective Jaime Pardinas, was being transferred from Florida to Nevada, when the incident occurred.
The 54-year-old officer, who has been on the force for 28 years, sustained stab wounds in the neck and back and remained in serious but stable condition.
The suspect was captured in a surveillance video fleeing his police escorts from a Wal-Mart parking lot near Dallas. Although chained at the hands and waist, he managed to use a piece of his eyeglasses to stab Pardinas several times.
Pardinas’ partner, Detective David Carrero was inside the store when the attack happened.
According to reports, the officers decided to drive to Texas after Morales became disruptive during the first leg of the flight.
Sgt. Robert Eberling said that Morales is a dangerous individual who has demonstrated how dangerous he is by his criminal past.
Eberling added that they are utilizing whatever they can to get Morales apprehended.
It was reported that in 2003, Morales attacked two women in Miami and pleaded guilty to those crimes in December. He was ordered back to Nevada, where he had been convicted of two aggravated sexual assault charges.
Authorities believe Morales is still in the Grapevine area but have also alerted all border crossings as they expressed concern about the suspect escaping to Mexico.
CBS News reported that several schools in the Dallas suburb are on soft lockdown, and police urged everyone to be alert in case friends or co-workers unexpectedly fail to show up.
Morales’ name has been entered in Texas’ “10 Most Wanted” list and there is a $10,000 reward for information that would lead to his capture.
