Federer beats qualifier, grabs quarterfinal berth in Rotterdam

Rotterdam, Netherlands (4E Sports) – Top seed and two-time champion Roger Federer booked a seat in the quarterfinal round after beating Dutch wild card Thiemo de Bakker, 6-3, 6-4, in just 64 minutes Friday in the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament.

Federer, who won the tournament in 2005 and 2012, will play Julien Benneteau for a spot in the semifinal.

The former world No. 1 is competing in the event for the eighth time, amassing a 23-5 record. The 24-year-old De Bakker, for his part, dropped to 2-12 against players in the top 10.

Second seed Juan Martin del Potro hit 12 aces to beat Latvian qualifier Ernests Gulbis, 7-6(5), 6-3, and set up a quarterfinal clash against Jarkko Nieminen, who defeated German qualifier Matthias Bachinger, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3, in just under two hours.

Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis continued his mastery over Richard Gasquet, 6-4, 6-4, to advance against Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria.

In Brazil, second seed and three-time champion Nicolas Almagro fired 18 aces to beat Chilean qualifier Paul Capdeville, 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-2, in the second round of the Brasil Open 2013.

World No. 15 Juan Monaco, was not as luck, as he suffered his third opening round exit of the year, losing to Italian Simone Bolelli, 7-5, 6-2, in 76 minutes.

Bolelli, who beat 2009 titlist Tommy Robredo Monday, converted four of his six break point opportunities to break a two-match losing streak against Monaco.

For his part, Carlos Berlocq needed two hours to beat eighth seed Albert Ramos 7-6(7), 6-4.

On the women’s side, top seed and world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka blanked Christina McHale, 6-0, 6-0, in the third round of the Qatar Open.

Azarenka’s win over McHale was the sixth time in her career she has won a match by double-bagel. She had two in 2008, one in 2009 and two more in 2011.

In the quarterfinal, Azarenka will face sixth seed Sara Errani, who beat Daniela Hantuchova, 7-5, 5-7, 6-2.

Meanwhile, fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska became the first player to hit 15 match wins on the WTA this year, beating 13th seed Ana Ivanovic, 6-1, 7-6(6) for a quarterfinal slot.

Next for Radwanska is 10th seed and good friend Caroline Wozniacki, who defeated Mona Barthel, 7-6(6), 6-3.

Also advancing to the quarterfinal were second seed Serena Williams, third seed Maria Sharapova, seventh seed Petra Kvitova and eighth seed Samantha Stosur.

For spots in the semifinal, Williams takes on Kvitova while Sharapova faces Stosur.
