Great Falls, MT, United States (4E) – Hackers broke into the emergency alert system of a Montana TV station on Monday to interrupt a show with a news report of a zombie attack.
The hoax on KRTV station of Great Falls did not cause panic, but was picked up by other news outlets such as CNN and Fox News to become a national headline and online hit by Tuesday.
The emergency news sound bite that interrupted an episode of the Steve Wilkes’ show told viewers in several Montana counties that authorities reported dead bodies rising from graves and attacking the living. It ended with a warning not to approach the zombies because they are extremely dangerous.
T he Great Falls Police Department received some funny calls, including one asking if they can shoot a zombie they encounter, according to its spokesman, Sgt. Bryan Slavik.
The identity of the hacker-prankster remains unknown and KRTV did not file a complaint, though it is trying to find out who the culprit was, Slavik said.
