Clarendon, Brandon star as Cal women down Arizona State

Berkeley, CA, United States (4E Sports) – Layshia Clarendon scored 18 points while Gennifer Brandon added a double-double with 10 points and 15 caroms as No. 6 California stormed to its eighth straight win after beating Arizona State, 66-53, Friday at Haas Pavilion.
Clarendon made eight of 11 attempts as the Golden Bears recorded their longest winning streak of the season and improved their record to 20-2, matching the 2008-09 team for the best 22-game record.
With her output, Clarendon raised her career total to 1,560 points, surpassing Karen Smith (1,559) for eighth on the Golden Bears’ all-time list.
Brandon, for her part, submitted her 12th double-double of the season and 27th of her career.
Talia Caldwell contributed 14 points to become the 23rd Golden Bear to crack 1,000 career points while Brittany Boyd tallied 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists to help the Golden Bears extend the current longest winning run in the Pac-12
California now leads the all-time series against Arizona State, 32-30, and has won the last three games against the Sun Devils.
With a 10-1 record, the Golden Bears are tied for the lead with Stanford (21-2) in the Pac-12 conference.
Joy Burke tallied 16 points and five rebounds for the Sun Devils (11-12, 3-8), who dropped their fourth straight game and six of their last seven outings.
Haley Videckis was the only other player in double-digit for the Sun Devil, scoring 11 points off the bench, while Promise Amukamara added nine.
Clarendon and Caldwell buried back-to-back jumpers to put the Golden Bears ahead by 23-12 but Videckis and Amukamara answered with five straights points to cut the lead to six.
However, Caldwell sank two foul shots, Clarendon made a short jumper and Boyd buried a triple in the last 1:46 of the first half to give the Golden Bears a 36-25 cushion at the break.
In the second half, Clarendon made a jumper with 5:32 remaining to put the Golden Bears ahead by 17, 60-43.
