Gainesville, FL, United States (4E Sports) – Florida Gators forward Will Yeguete will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Friday and will miss the remainder of the regular season.
The Gators are hoping Yeguete will be able to return for the SEC tournament.
The 6-foot-7 Yeguete had been dealing with tendinitis in his right knee for several weeks, which he further injured during the Gators’ 80-69 loss at Arkansas Tuesday. The surgery is meant to remove loose bodies in his right knee.
“He’s a great defender, great rebounder. He gives you a lot of flexibility on the defensive end of the floor of things you can do from pressing to half-court defense to switching to having him guard certain players. That’s going to be definitely a loss,” says Gators coach Billy Donovan.
Donovan said he will turn to freshmen 6-4 Michael Frazier or 6-6 DeVon Walker.
“We’re going to have to look at playing four guards. We’re going to look at moving Frazier to a power forward spot some,” said Donovan.
This is the second year in a row that Florida will miss Yeguete for a significant stretch. He missed the final nine games of last season after suffering a broken left foot, but it wasn’t as impactful because of better depth.
