U.S. plans to reduce presence of aircraft carriers in Gulf
Pentagon, United States (4E) – In what could show a major shift in America’s defense capabilities in the region, Pentagon chief Leon Panetta on Wednesday decided to reduce number of aircraft carriers from present two to one in the Persian Gulf region.
The U.S. has also cancelled the deployment of USS Harry Truman, which was scheduled later this week, in the region, a National Public Radio report said.
Two U.S. military carriers have been deployed in the Gulf since 2010 when tensions with Iran took a new height.
Although the Defense Department has not formally announced the decision, it is widely believed that the move will be taken in the wake of budget constraints since the department faces possible automatic cuts or sequestration next month.
