Austin, TX, United States (4E Sports) – Federal agents are currently conducting a criminal investigation on disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong for alleged obstruction, witness tampering and intimidation.

According to a reliable source who agreed to speak to ABC News on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the matter, Armstrong is now subject of a criminal investigation.

After years of denial, Armstrong recently admitted in an interview with Oprah Winfrey that he used performance-enhancing drugs during his run to seven Tour de France titles.

The report on a new criminal investigation on Armstrong was revealed amid US Attorney for Southern California Andre Birotte’s statement regarding the dropping of an earlier case against the cyclist last year.

Birotte’s office spent nearly two years investigating Armstrong and several officials of the US Postal Team for drug distribution, fraud and conspiracy by collecting money from sponsors while allegedly using performance-enhancing drugs.

According to sources, agents had recommended an indictment and could not understand why Birotte’s office dropped the charges.

A spokesman for the office said Birotte made the decision not to pursue a prosecution after reviewing the evidence and consulting with his top lieutenants.

“Birotte does not speak for the federal government as a whole,” a source told ABC News.
