Washington, United States (4E) – Just hours after news broke that Iran launched a monkey into space with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s intention to become the first man to travel space, outspoken American US Senator John McCain (R-AZ) on Monday compared him to a monkey in his official Twitter feed.
The 2008 Republican presidential nominee’s comments were vehemently condemned by many of his 1.8 million followers.
Responding to McCain’s comparison, one of the users @heyitsurban tweeted, “Wow, way to elevate political discourse,” while another user, @manolo_loop, wrote, “@SenJohnMcCain is racism funny?”
Less than an hour later, McCain posted a follow-up, “Re: Iran space tweet – lighten up folks, can’t everyone take a joke?”
Earlier, Ahmadinejad expressed his intention to become the first Iranian man in space. “Our youth are determined to send a man into space within the next four, five years, and I’m sure that will happen,” he said at a ceremony after unveiling two new Iranian-made satellites.
“I’m ready to be the first Iranian to be sacrificed by the scientists of my country and go into space, even though I know there are a lot of candidates,” Ahmadinejad quipped.
