Devils surge late to top Islanders

Uniondale, NY, United States (4E Sports) – Steve Bernier scored two goals and David Clarkson added one more as the New Jersey Devils used a third period barrage to beat the New York Islanders Sunday at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

The Devils snapped their four-game losing streak and there’s no sweeter way to do it but against their division rival.

After a fruitless first two periods, the action picked up in the third with the Devils taking their opportunities by the horn.

Bernier, who scored his first goal of the season against the Islander four days ago, slotted in two crucial goals at 16:06 and 17:16 minute before David Clarkson finished it off with another goal at 19:38 mark.

The Devils dominated the Islanders across all major statistical categories, including total shots (27-22) and takeaways (9-6).

Johan Hedberg recorded 22 saves for his first shutout this season while Islanders net-minder Evgeni Nabokov had 24 saves in a losing effort.

The Devils improved to 4-1-3 (11 points) while Islanders dropped to 4-3-1 (9 points).
