Baltimore, MD, United States (4E Sports) – Lamont Jones scored a game-high 23 points and David Laury added a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds as Iona never trailed en route to a 79-71 triumph over Loyola (Md) Sunday at Reitz Arena.
Sean Armand added 14 points and David Laury had 10 as the Gaels (14-7, 82 MAAC) cruised to their third straight win.
The Gaels made 26 of 52 shots from the field for 48.1 percent compared to the Greyhounds’ 38.9 percent clip. Iona also shot better from the foul line, sinking 20 of 25 shots for 80 percent while Loyola shot a woeful 8-for-18 for 44.4 percent.
Dylon Cormier tallied a team-high 18 points to go with seven rebounds and three steals for the Greyhounds (15-7, 7-3 MAAC), who lost four of their last seven games.
Robert Olson added 14 points and Jordan Latham had 11 for Loyola, which outrebounded (36-35) and out-assisted (18-11) Iona.
From a 2-2 tie, the Gaels extended their lead to 18-6 behind a fastbreak dunk by Tre Bowman and a foul shot by Jones with 12:11 remaining in the first half.
Layups by Anthony Winbush and Erik Etherly and a three by Olson cut the Greyhounds’ deficit to 18-13.
DaShawn Gomez burtied a three for Iona, putting the Gaels ahead by 13, 35-25, but Loyola made it 38-30 at the half on an Olson 3-point play.
In the second half, Jones sank a three-pointer to give Iona a 69-54 advantage but Loyola unleashed a 12-2 run to cut the lead to 71-66.
However, Iona held Loyola to just a free throw until the last 10 seconds of the game to seal the victory.
