Ex-star pitcher Pedro Martinez lands front-office role with Red Sox
Boston, MA, United States (4E Sports) – Former ace pitcher Pedro Martinez will rejoin the Boston Red Sox in a capacity of a special assistant to general manager Ben Cherington, the team confirmed Thursday.
Martinez will re-unite with former catcher Jason Varitek, playing a vital role in players’ development and planning with the ball club’s top brass.
The 41-year-old Martinez will also be mentoring their young pitchers, but the three-time CY Young winner ruled out any possibility of a comeback.
“Don’t even think about me coming back,” Martinez told ESPN — he’s looking forward to getting his “nose dirty.”
Martinez said he really appreciated the chance of rejoining his old ball club, hoping to help the franchise recapture its championship form after woeful runs in the past three seasons.
“I’ve been away long enough now,” Martinez said Thursday. “I spent time with my family, and now the situation is right. I think they need people like me that could probably relate to the players, relate to the front office, have the good communication and the interest that they need right now.
