New York, NY, United States (4E) – The New York Police Department (NYPD) will start testing on the street portable machines that detect concealed guns, according to Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly.
The machine that can fit inside a police car or a street corner can detect concealed firearms from a distance. It works like an airport scanner by reading terahertz or the natural energy emitted by a human body or an object. Guns block the emission of such radiation revealing its shape.
The machine was demonstrated Wednesday at a Police Foundation breakfast by using it to view a plainclothes policeman with a gun underneath a jersey and jeans. The machine showed the shape of the hidden gun.
Kelly said the machine was delivered last week and results of the test will be the basis on where to deploy the anti-crime technology.
