Las Vegas, NV, United States (4E) – The Las Vegas police lieutenant who fatally shot his wife, son and himself Monday has been identified by the Clark County Office of the Medical Examiner Tuesday.

Authorities said Hans Pieter Walters called 911 saying he shot his family and threatened to burn his home and harm anybody who responded.

Upon arrival, police discovered the family’s house in Boulder City, Nevada on fire, with Walters confronting them outside with a gun and refusing to surrender, before he returned inside the house.

After the fire was extinguished, a Special Weapons And Tactics team found the bodies of Walters, his 46-year-old wife, Kathryn Michelle, and their five-year-old son, Maximilian.

Officials revealed that Walters has been a member of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department for 21 years and became a lieutenant in 2010 while his wife worked for the department for 13 years before leaving in 2004.
