Keith Appling nets 15 points as Michigan State edges Ohio State
East Lansing, MI, United States (4E Sports) – Keith Appling scored 15 points and Adreian Payne added 14 as the Michigan State Spartans toppled the Ohio State Buckeyes, 59-56, Saturday at Jack Breslin Student Events Center.
After sweeping through their first weeks of basketball, Ohio State has realized the Big Ten competition has stiffened.
Ohio State suffered its second loss since the start of Big Ten regular-season as a late rally came just short, bowing to the 18th ranked Spartans.
Deshaun Thomas racked up a game-high 28 points and 7 rebounds to almost single-handedly power the Buckeyes, who shot just 40 percent from the floor.
Michigan State looked to destroy the Buckeyes from the opening tap with a 12-2 run. But Ohio State kept its poise, leaning on a suddenly red-hot Thomas to narrow the score down to 30-26 at the break.
The game went back-and-forth down to the final seconds but the Spartans came up with the big plays to score the crucial win.
Appling was immense down the stretch as he scored the Spartans’ last six points, including a pair of gut-check free-throws to give his team a three-point cushion with seven seconds left.
Ohio State had a chance to send it to overtime but Shannon Scott threw up an off target shot beyond the arc as the final buzzer expired.
The Buckeyes dropped to 13-4 (3-2 in Big Ten) while the Spartans enhanced their record to 16-3 (5-1 in Big Ten).
