New Jersey cop charged with shooting at his home

Deptford, NJ, United States (4E) – A 29-year-old police officer from Deptford Township, New Jersey has been charged in a shooting that occurred at his home Saturday morning.

According to the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office, Officer James Stuart fired and hit 27-year-old David Compton in the head around 5 a.m. at Stuart’s home located on Stanford Avenue.

In a news release, the prosecutor’s spokesman Bernie Weisenfeld said Compton, a civilian, was rushed in serious condition at Cooper Medical Center in Camden.

Stuart was charged with two counts of aggravated assault and was released after posting $10,000 bail, revealed officials.

The officer, who has been in the service for five years, was suspended with pay.

Action News reported Stuart was holding the gun when it accidentally went off. The case remains under investigation.

A statement was issued by the injured man’s family Monday thanking the medical personnel involved in the treatment of David Compton, and sending appreciation to the authorities investigating the case as they asked the media and the public to respect the family’s wishes for privacy.
