Reno County, KS, United States (4E) – Authorities are investigating the death of a 54-year-old inmate in Kansas’ Reno County Jail Sunday evening.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, James Richard Shumpert was discovered unconscious in his jail cell around 9 p.m.

Deputies administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation and called an ambulance, but Shumpert was declared dead at the hospital.

Sheriff Randy Henderson said initial investigation revealed Shumpert died of natural causes. The inmate, who was staying alone in a cell, has known medical issues.

Shumpert was facing charges of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, criminal possession of a firearm and a probation violation. He was arrested Saturday.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating the case, which is a standard procedure when a person dies while in custody.
