VA. Beach may have upperhand over Louisville in luring NBA’s Kings
Louisville, KY, United States (4E Sports) – Virginia Beach has emerged as a frontrunner to capture the Kings, should they relocate.
According to the Sacramento Bee, Virginia Beach Mayor Will Sessoms has set a Monday deadline to have a lease signed with a professional sports team, widely believed to be the Sacramento Kings.
Sessoms has been advocating plans for a $300 million-plus arena in Virginia Beach, which would house the pro team.
Virginia Beach officials said that two state General Assembly representatives are prepared to request $150 million in state funds next week to help build the arena if there is a deal with an NBA tenant.
The Kings have declined to comment on the speculation that they are the team in play.
But Attorney Eric Rose, who represents Kings owner, the Maloof family, said that team representatives have been in contact with cities interested in the team.
Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer, meanwhile, said no NBA team has been in contact with local officials.
